Katie and Kenny

Tour the Railroad

BOOK SUMMARY

Katie and Kenny, along with their father, are taken on a tour of the local railroad yard by an engineer with the railroad. The basis of the book is to introduce children to the role railroads play in our lives, their importance, and to stress safety around railroads and their equipment: “NO PLAYGROUND!”

In today’s world, the role of railroads has hardly been more important. Keith N. Corman feels it is a MUST to introduce to people why they are there, what they do, and, most importantly, how to be safety conscious around them.

EXCERPTS

1. Katie and Kenny each took one of their daddy’s paws and followed Timothy out the back door and to the platform. In front of them purred a big locomotive painted a bright orange with black stripes, and under the cab windows was a big number 9.

2. “Now we’re going to visit another very important part of the railroad. It is where we take big containers and truck trailers off the trains and have trucks deliver them around our town.

3. “When the lights are flashing, you must always stop and stay stopped until it’s clear! Always check both directions before crossing! Another train could be coming from the other direction as the first one passes!”
